Chesham Cricket Club News story

John Mills and Fred Harris

11 Nov 2023

The Club is very sad to report the recent deaths of two all-time club legends; John Mills and Fred Harris.

In their contrasting styles, they were feared and respected by batsmen wherever they performed.
Fred was a master of seam and swing at a lively pace, taking 323 wickets in his ninety appearances for
Bucks, including twice taking ten wickets in a match and fifteen five wicket hauls. For Chesham, it is
estimated that Fred took over two thousand wickets. Fred was also a fine hard-hitting batsman, scoring
1,489 Buckinghamshire runs and scoring several centuries for Chesham.

John, always known as Millie, was a fierce fast bowler who was not averse to causing a batsman a bit of
pain. He took 86 wickets for Bucks in his 23 appearances, including six fivefers and a best of 8-22 vs
Hertfordshire. He also took around two thousand wickets for Chesham. Millie was not known for his
contributions with the bat, but more than made up for that during his many years as groundsman.

Both men were lively characters. Generations of Chesham players had the pleasure and privilege of
playing alongside these two great men, who will be sorely missed. The club will arrange for suitable
commemoration of their lives and dedication to Chesham CC, and our thoughts are with their families
and friends.
