The Gods of Cricket, or at least Messrs Duckworth and Lewis or perhaps even the Queen looking down from her adjacent castle, shone their collective benign light through the gloom to help Chesham 1st X1 last Saturday when they beat Windsor by 7wickets. Asked to bat by Chesham skipper Jason Rance, Windsor were made to fight hard under lowering cloud covered skies against some tight Chesham bowling. In the 49th over rain brought the innings to a halt at 178 for 6. The wickets were shared between Ashley Turney, Pip France, Umar Aslam and Jason Rance. After a break of nearly 2 hours Chesham were set a revised target of 116 in 20 overs as calculated by the D/W formula. The Chesham batsmen Mark Eteen (14), Matt Rance (25) and brother Jason (25) all batted positively before a 4th wicket partnership of 42 between Andy Goddard (15no) and Luke Webb (27no) sealed victory at 117 for 3 with nearly 3 overs to spare. Chesham, with 3 wins out of 3, now lead Div 1 of the Thames Valley League together with Wokingham, who are their opponents at the Meadow this Saturday.
Rain washed out the 2nd X1 match with Finchampstead with Chesham on 147 for 7 in the 47th over. Ollie Turner, who top scored with a hard hit 44, and Matt Watson with an obdurate undefeated 30, had rescued them from a perilous early position of 9 for 3. The rain also robbed Chesham 3rds of an almost certain victory over Hillingdon as Steve Ayres bowled them out for a paltry total of 63 , taking 6 for 15. Chesham were 12 without loss before the heavens opened. The previously table topping 4th X1 had their first taste of defeat at Chalfont St Peter (205 for 4) when they were dismissed for 140, in which skipper Wade Mahmood fought hard to top score with 46 .
