Following an overnight monsoon it was clearly a ‘putting in’ day at the Meadow for Chesham’s game with Cove and with the visitors winning an important toss Chesham were duly asked to bat. Matt Rance (19) and Andy Goddard opened confidently but with the score on 25 Rance was caught mistiming a hook. Goddard (17) and Jason Rance (15) took the score close to 50 before both were dismissed to be followed soon after by Henry White and Gift Kwatsha. Fortunately Luke Webb held firm and had reached 39 with some pleasing shots off his legs before being bowled hitting across the line. With a continued accurate spell of bowling by Collins (5 for 35) the innings had reached it’s nadir at 109 for 9 before a sensible and ultimately crucial last wicket partnership between Umar Aslam and Ashley Turney took the final total to 129. Cove’s innings began solidly before Pip France made the initial break through. This was followed by a fine spell by Ashley Turney, beginning with an athletic catch and bowl quickly followed by two more wickets to give him figures of 3 for 21. Jack Mciver then took a wicket to leave the game in the balance with Cove on 65 for 5. France rejoined the attack and the innings slowly subsided to 102 for 9. A hitherto almost blameless fielding display was marred when two catches were missed but finally, with the score on 119 and the supporters of both teams getting twitchy, Cove’s number eleven skied another caught and bowled to Pip France, giving him figures of 4 for 39 and an important victory by 10 runs for Chesham, increasing their lead at the top of Division 1 to 11 points.
In Division2a Chesham 2nd X1 gained a comfortable win by 9 wickets over Tring Park 2nds. The home side were dismissed in 51 overs for 145 following good bowling by Alex Watson and Chris Royals who each took four wickets. Chesham then took an even tighter grip on the game with a fine opening partnership of 80 between Brendan O’Donovan (38) and Tom Free. Tring’s total was overtaken without further loss with an undefeated stand between Free (72*) and Chris Hedges (32*) with overs to spare.
In beating Beaconsfield 2nds by 35 runs in Div 4a, Chesham 3rds total of 185 owed much to Anuraj Nair (41) and Rohith Shylendra (36). Beaconsfield then struggled against the guile of Mo Asuaf whose match winning spell of 5 for 17 left them all out for 147 in the 38th over.
Unfortunately, on Sunday Chesham Women rather spoiled a perfect weekend for the club by losing to Old Actonians by 44 runs. In Actonians total of 177 for 6 off 30 overs Lyndsey Parham took 3 for 22 and Harriet Stone was top score with an undefeated 73 in Chesham’s reply of 133 for 4.
