Great Wins for 1sts and 4ths, narrow defeats for 2nds and 3rds and ladies

In yet another TVL Div 1 nail biting finish a youthful Chesham snatched victory from the jaws of defeat at Marlow by a whisker. Three clichés in one sentence! In a much more solid team batting effort  Chesham owed much to Matt Rance (34), Luke Webb (55), Tom Free (33) and especially Gift Kwatsha, whose hard hitting innings of 61 included 3 sixes, enabling them to reach a total of 259 for 9 in 52 overs. Veteran spinner Jeremy Batty (3 for 74) being the home side’s leading wicket taker. In reply Marlow lost early wickets, including Graham Paskins for a duck, to Gift Kwatsha’s opening salvo, leaving them reeling at 18 for 3. A partnership of 90 between B.Hogg (62) and B.Peel (50) then righted the ship and with runs coming freely down the order the home side looked odds on winners until their 9th wicket fell at 256.  Paul Bezezeke (26) then became the third run out victim of some tigerish fielding when, with three needed from the final over, he attempted a suicidal second run leaving Chesham ecstatic winners by a mere 2 runs. With Stoke Green losing Chesham have narrowed the gap to 14 points in second place.

In Div 2a, an injury ridden 2nd X1 fought gamely against Harefield 2s at the Meadow reaching a total of 163, with 40's from David Hughes-D'Aeth and Alex Watson, before going down by 3 wickets with Sam Rance taking 4 for 52 in a promising spell.

An exciting Div 4a game at Chartridge saw Chesham 4th X1 , having totalled 186 for 4, Mark Hughes D’Aeth (58), Graham Rance(50 and Matt Thompson (47) being the main contributors, then reduce Windsor 2s to 142 for 8. Unfortunately some late hitting at the end brought Windsor victory without further loss with an over to spare. Young Joseph Rance (3 for 40) again impressing with the ball.

Meanwhile the 4thX1 maintained their progress in Div 7b with a comfortable five wicket win over Harefield 4ths. Harefield were dismissed for 159 largely due to a great spell by Max Hutt who took 7 for 30. Chesham then coasted to victory thanks mainly to an undefeated innings of 68* by Sarfraz Nawaz.

In a North London League match at the Meadow on Sunday Chesham Women fought hard and well against Hampstead. Harret Stone held the Chesham innings together enabling them to reach a total of 84 for 8. Lyndsey Parham then took 2 early wickets and with Laura Gurney taking 2 for 5 , Hampstead were reduced to 54 for 5. Unfortunately for Chesham this was their high point and the Hampstead lower order hit out to overhaul their total with 9 overs to spare.
