Match report The season started on a beautiful April day away at Aston Rowant. Losing the toss and fielding first, Chesham started well with tight spells from Freddie Owen (0-21) and Pete Clifford (1-16) with both deserving more, especially Clifford who beat the bat on multiple occasions. Steve Ayres (1-17) continued the piling on the pressure whilst Umar Aslam (2-30) bowled with accuracy and intelligence. Mikey Burden, Anuraj Ramachandran and Mo Asuaf finished off the innings and a good fielding performance saw Chesham restrict Aston Rowant to 159. Credit must go to Ed Wainwright for a sharp keeping performance including a catch and a stumping, whilst Umar Aslam provided energy in the field. The mainstay of the Aston Rowant innings was opener Condon, who top scored with 60, and there were starts from Needham and Cousins in the middle order.
In reply, Chesham started relatively slowly, mirroring the Aston Rowant innings. Whatmore (2-19) picked up the wickets of Phil John and Mo Asuaf, both bowled. Pete Clifford, Matt Watson and Ed Wainwright all made a small start without making a significant contribution in the middle order. At the other end, Ed Turner was compiling a very sensible innings picking up runs when available, with shots all around the wicket. When Freddie Owen was out with 7 overs to go, 37 were still required as Anuraj walked to the crease. 4 balls later, the game had swung in Chesham’s favour as Anuraj went 6,4,6 before departing caught on the boundary. It was left to Umar Aslam to partner Turner and both were calm under pressure as they whittled down the remaining runs. The winning runs came in the form of extras which were plentiful throughout the day. Aslam finished 5*, but the undoubted man of the match was Ed Turner, who finished 60* with a very mature innings to see his team home.
