Match report Chesham's willingness to play through some fairly miserable conditions at Burnham on Saturday paid dividends as the side left the Burnham Beeches with 20 points to go joint top with Amersham.
It wasn't a bad toss to lose on a tricky wicket and Steve Ayres and Alex Watson combined for an excellent opening spell that never really let Burnham's batsmen into the game. Between rain breaks Chesham kept the pressure on and the run rate never really threatened to break the 2.5 an over mark. As an aside, I still find rain breaks an anachronism that doesn't make sense in an age where matches generally start on dry wickets and there is little danger of puddles forming on the pitch. Whatever batsmen say about getting out during the rain, I fail to see how some drops of water alter your shots or decision making abilities unless rain holds some sub-conscious terror to opening bats. Granted it isn't pleasant and probably doesn't facilitate exciting cricket but neither does rugby or football in the rain but they just get on with it. In short, cricketers should man up. But I digress. Brenton Campbell and Tom Free carried on the good work and all four seamers were good value. Despite some lower order resistance 106 always looked below par.
Burnham took the old ball which accounted for Maciver and White early on but Graham Rance (55*) was his typical self and saw Chesham home comfortably with more rain still far away.
The other two sides making up the top three played each other on Saturday and Amersham came out on top chasing, knocking Marlow Park down to third and meaning that there is nothing to separate us from our arch-rivals at the top of the table. We'll see them in three weeks but next up is a home game against Farnham Royal which all of us not high as a kite in a field near Reading can't wait for.
