Chesham Cricket Club Sunday 2nd XI v Harpenden 2nd XI on Sun 16 Jun 2013 at 13:30
Chesham Cricket Club Won by 71 runs

Match report The previous Sunday 2s outing saw clear blue skies, a wicket used in county 2nd XI cricket and a Queensland under 19 player leading off some quality batting from both sides. What a difference a week makes. This Sunday we had the pleasure of playing on one of those far famed Chesham wet wickets in a match where runs were at a premium. We also won.
There were unbelievable scenes early on at The Meadow as Royals won a toss for the first time in 2013, and he just about made the unsurprising decision to bat first before celebrating wildly. Watched by two cricketing celebrities, one of whom plays a bit for Middlesex and the other who is setting an example to all of us about how leaving the club can get you a higher standard of cricket by playing for Wycombe 2s, the going was tough on a wicket with a mind of its own due to leaky covers and Chesham found themselves at 34-3 and in a serious contest early on. The innings was recovered by Sunday 2s debutante and former child prodigy Pat Rigby (30) and Sunday 2s facebook chat stalwart Henry Morris (50). In perhaps the only display of quality with the bat in the match, the pair compiled what turned out to be match winning innings against a background of persistent rain.
The inevitable Sunday 2s trademarked collapse came after the dismissal of James White (who hit the second biggest 'Santhi Maximum' of the year, mine being first of course) as Wainwright was run out, Morris felt guilty and hurtled down the wicket soon after and Royals attempted to sweep three balls in a row with ever decreasing success. It was left, as it so often is, to Guy Fowler to grind out the tough runs at the end to get the good guys to a defendable 165.
Tea, made by David 'I've never made a sandwich in my life' Hughes-D'Aeth and his mother, was good and after having our fill the Sunday 2s took to the field, aware that a huge effort was needed.
It was all about the economy rate at the start of the innings and therefore, unsurprisingly, a Burden was bowling. Non big time Burden (2-12) had a great day, taking two wickets at the start, with DHD providing a similarly economical spell from the other end. The pressure didn't relent as Rigby and Royals (3-32) were introduced to the attack and buoyed by Royals genuinely turning two or three balls, Chesham gradually took full control of the match as the wickets tumbled. Sam Rance (4-14), fresh from starring in "the worst piece of fielding in history" (Royals, 2013) was then introduced to the attack and dismissed dangerman Hall with a ball that started outside off and hit leg. From there the game was up and Harpenden's final total of 94 highlighted the 'serious hustle' that Chesham put in during the second innings in what was a champagne bowling and fielding display from a side rarely know for their sharpness in the outfield.
And so we have our first league win of 2013 at the second time of asking. Next Sunday will see a couple of friendlies before league action resumes at Totteridge. For the moment, however, I think we can all sit back and savour those sweet, sweet four points. Or maybe its just me.

MoM - A contentious decision that was decided by just one vote, Henry Morris pipping Sam Rance by virtue of runs on the board being key. Also, lets face it, Sam's fielding nightmare and cleaning up of the tail also played a part.

DoD - When you vote for yourself you know its bad. Sam Rance jogs round the boundary to a very slow moving ball, reaches down, misses and the ball rolls just over the rope. As the captain sinks to his knees in despair rather than disgust, he then looks up to see the same fielder (in the loosest sense of the world) unable to reach the ball beneath the covers. At least he made up for it later...
