High Wycombe v Chesham Cricket Club Sunday 2nd XI on Sun 30 Jun 2013 at 14:00
Chesham Cricket Club Lost by 5 wickets

Match report Well, what a week. Countless emails and phone calls to club members past and present to raise the 2s and 3s were followed by the 1s match being cancelled, all sorts of antics in the early hours of Sunday morning which led to your humble correspondent being forced into producing a herculean effort to actually get out of the house for this friendly against High Wycombe. It was perhaps, therefore, only fitting that this match would be controversial and a shame that, after a good close game of cricket, there was only one topic of conversation in the bar post match.
I appreciate that I often get on a scarcely earned high horse about the Spirit of the Game and that this could be considered yet another example of this, however I do not think that I am alone in being of the belief that in a Sunday friendly you always walk when you've nicked it. What you do in the TVL is your own business but in a match designed to make sure that everyone has a casual run out on a Sunday afternoon you make a mockery of the game and you waste the afternoons of all participants if you await the decision of your mate who has been cajoled into doing his 10 overs in the middle.
By this stage of the report the sharper among you will have guessed that the main bone of contention in this match was the game turning moment when a Wycombe batsman wafted at a wide delivery from Mikey Burden, snicked it to Henry White and refused to walk. He then proceeded to take advantage of his reprieve and hit a match winning ton, all the while having seemingly no regard for the spirit or nature of the game nor realising that it was probably wise for him to keep his mouth shut. By the time he was dismissed he had complied 118 and determined the victors of this tie with an innings that showed both a fair degree of class and also his complete and utter lack of it.

What a shame as this was one of the best matches of the year. MHD finally overcame his fear of the number one hundred and carried his bat for 105*. Aided by very useful forties by Pat Rigby and Henry Morris, Chesham set Wycombe 227 to win, what was little more than a par score due to the flat track and rapid outfield.
Tea was excellent and afterward Chesham struggled to exert a great deal of pressure on the Wycombe batting lineup and were a little bit lacklustre in the afternoon sun. This all changed when a mistimed cut resulted in what would prove to be premature celebration of a crucial wicket and from there the mood of the fielding side changed dramatically and all those present at London Road who are members of Bucks' biggest, best and proudest club could only look on ashamed as the realisation hit that this had been done by a player on their square wearing their badge.
Twenty five overs later the same batsman was left with little choice but to walk as he holed out to Guy Fowler half way out to the boundary, though there was something resembling Charles Kortright's famous quip to W.G. Grace in the voices of the Chesham players at this point "Surely you're not leaving Doc, there's still one stump standing". When James White's 'right arm rapid' garnered two genuine wickets (celebrated wildly of course), there was a feeling that stranger things had happened than Chesham escaping with a win. However, it was not to be and the Sunday 2s had succumbed to only their second defeat of the season.
