Alexandra Park v Chesham Cricket Club Sunday 2nd XI on Sun 18 Aug 2013 at 13:00
Chesham Cricket Club Won by 7 wickets

Match report A used condom on the square and an outfield trench dug slightly too early for the Great War centenary greeted the Sunday 2s after an hour long trip to North London.
From the far end of Alexandra Park's ground you can see a transmission station on top of the Palace from where the BBC first beamed programming. Had that first transmission been this match the broadcasting sector probably would have withered and died in its infancy as this was not a match at all appealing to spectators and, at various stages, could have been described as "tragic".
On a very dry and dusty track reminiscent of the wicket at some provincial Indian ground on day 5 which was offering highly irregular bounce and ridiculous turn (even for me) any total could look defendable. Against accurate bowling from Ben Marote and Pat Rigby Alexandra Park's top order never looked comfortable and good bowling combined with good fielding, including a diving catch at mid off from yours truly (in my mind it is starting to look like Strauss' grab in the '05 Ashes) and Marote was very good value for his three wickets. At one stage Alexandra Park were 46-7 but unsurprisingly we then lost focus and some decent batting, aided by Mark deciding not to take a catch because he wanted to bat for longer (he was demoted to 5 as a result) allowed the home side to reach 103 all out.
After a good tea we began our chase with the decent Alexandra Park openers using the variable bounce well, accounting for both Goodmans and Karan early on. Those of us looking on from the pavilion started to get very nervous and felt none of us in the hutch would stand much of a chance of doing anything on that track but have a swing at a couple and inevitably contribute to a patented Sunday 2s collapse. Thankfully Henry White and Mark HD weathered the storm and once the home openers were rested White smashed the change bowlers to all parts to ease us to victory by 7 wickets and ensure that our promotion challenge, however flimsy and unlikely, remains intact going into the final day of the League season in a fortnight.

Never in doubt...
