Match report Our first match of the season was pleasing and disappointing in equal measure. There were some great individual performances with the bat and ball, including a fine innings from Hussain and some very impressive bowling from Conall and Shaylin. Additionally, the overall standard of fielding was much improved on last season, although there is still scope for sharpened responses here. At the start of the first innings, it seemed conceivable that Great Kingshill would be bowled out before completing their overs, such was the quality of the opening bowlers and the attritional fielding display. Unfortunately the bowling that followed was frequently wayward and it is remarkable that Conall was able to hold on to so much behind the stumps in the circumstances – in short, we bowled too many balls that were wide or above waist height and the Great Kingshill total accelerated towards a competitive total. In our response in the second innings, we actually scored more runs off the bat than Great Kingshill and we had a very productive partnership between Hussain and Seb in the middle overs which laid a good foundation. Sadly the lower order weren’t able to capitalise on that in the end. Therefore, there is one area of improvement that we must seek in our next game – accurate bowling! We shouldn’t be seeking express speed at the sake of accuracy (notably our most successful bowlers – Shaylin and Conall – took pace off the bowl, but landed it in the right spot each time). Some practice against the wall at home or in the nets at training would be good. Our cup run is over, but there is still all to play for in the league.
