Uxbridge 1st XI v Chesham Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 20 Aug 2022 at 12:30
Chesham Cricket Club Won by 1 wickets

Match report Chesham 2s claimed a significant scalp Saturday as they defeated Uxbridge 1sts by 1 wicket with 2 balls to spare.
It was a superb game of cricket that ebbed and flowed. Both sides would be justified in feeling that they dominated different periods of it, and Uxbridge certainly had the better of the early exchanges as Quadri and Shah picked up from where they left off 9 weeks ago in dispatching Chesham bowling to all parts. 80 runs flowed in the first 10 overs, but critically Al removed both men which offered Chesham a route back into the game.
It was Chesham’s turn to take control of the game. 20 overs of spin yielded just 59 runs and our fielding effort looked staggeringly competent. A watchful knock from Uxbridge keeper Qaiss Raja prevented subsidence, his 81 ball 63 set his tail up for a late stab, which included some enormous sixes. Charlie finished with a fourfer that cleared up the tail with a ball to spare. 243 to win at tea.
The chase got off to a strange start. Plenty of extras but very little off the bat. Santi lost his middle stump and disappeared off to a pub crawl, which his teammates took really well. Runs started to flow, but so did wickets and Uxbridge scented a quick victory with Chesham reeling at 85-5 in the sixteenth over.
Enter Luke Dawson and Chris Royals. Luke later described the approach of the pair as ‘General Haig-ing it’, which perhaps needs to be further broken down. Luke grafted hard at the start but began to play some superb shots and score fluently, finding a winning formula in the manner of the BEF in August 1918. Chris, taking the approach that his role was to stand his ground and that there was not much expected of him offensively more closely resembled the Belgians on the Yser. 121 put on in 27 overs. Chris departed for a highly watchful 36 off 86, giving Al a chance to whack some spin which he took.
Uxbridge had gone from very loud to very quiet at this stage, but there was a further twist. In an event that was both devastating, a major setback and objectively hilarious Al smashed a drive down the ground, the bowler got a fingertip to the ball and Luke was left marooned in the middle of the wicket. Luke ended with 87 off 92 and deserved the maiden 2s century he fell just short of, needless to say this did not stop everyone from pissing themselves laughing.
There was still a game to win though and now it really was in the balance. A large crowd had gathered. Charlie got a first baller and Uxbridge felt the game was in the bag. They hadn’t reckoned on the fact that Matty now has pretty significant experience batting in a run chase, which started to show. Al ran himself out in headloss style, leaving the Clifford brothers 6 runs to win off the final 8 balls. Uxbridge may have felt with two to win they could pressurise Alfie but this proved to be wishful thinking as he calmly clipped the ball to the square leg boundary, bringing up a fifth consecutive victory, with the Cliffords still managing to have an argument on the walk off the pitch.
For Uxbridge the result prevented them taking what may have proved to be an unassailable lead at the top of the table, just six points now separating them from Kew for the title. For Chesham, the win moves us up to fourth in the table. Europe awaits.
