Kew 1st XI v Chesham Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 03 Sep 2022 at 12:30
Chesham Cricket Club Lost By 9 Wickets

Match report Not much to say about this one really. Kew needed a win and some help to take the title, an understrength Chesham were playing out time, and it showed.
The pitch was pretty horrendous and Chesham never looked like putting up a proper score. Our bowling left something to be desired and we gave Kew with plenty of time to watch Uxbridge on the frogbox over a few pints.

Uxbridge took the title by virtue of relegating Amersham but it was all academic from a Chesham perspective.

Another season in the books, our eighth in Division 2 and another mid table finish. In truth we can look back on this as a season of missed opportunities. We lost three games to horrific availability, but beyond those I can only count the opening day loss to High Wycombe and the away defeat at Bushy Park as days where we didn't aggressively shoot ourselves in the foot in defeat. Victories like those away at Uxbridge and Marlow were a much better reflection of the quality of our side - we are able to compete at the top of the table when we put our minds to it as whilst we probably lack the gun players of the 1st XIs, 1-11 we are generally the better cricketers.
With all this said, there is no shame in a mid-table finish as a second XI, we've played some excellent cricket at times and as we've seen, maintaining your position in this division is no mean feat. Moreover, playing cricket with the group of people we have available to us at Chesham is a pleasure in of itself and is of great credit to the club. As we've seen a few times this season, such pleasures are far from universal.

We're also at the end of an era as the man with the tiny head steps down as captain and returns to the ranks. On behalf of the whole club, Al you're a Chesham legend and have done a hell of a job over the last four years. Life after captaincy is significantly less stressful, I can tell you that. That was a call to put down the whisky, if it was too subtle.

Thanks to all those who help make this a great side to be a part of. To name a few - James as scorer, JR for setting up the ground every week and stepping in to umpire, Dave for preparing one of the better decks in the League and Jayne for making teas and generally being exceptionally patient with our post-match antics.

As for next year? The familiar faces of Tring and Amersham may be gone, but we can look forward to a resumption of hostilities with Harefield and new challenges from Beaconsfield and Stoke Green. We should be able to keep the side together, and who knows? Another year older and wiser, or at least with less hair. Until next time...
